Early Life and Career

Dustin Poirier was born on January 19, 1989 in Lafayette, Louisiana to parents of Acadian French descent. As a teenager, he attended Northside High School for a brief period of time before dropping out due to repeated street-fighting skirmishes.

Career Beginnings

In 2009, Poirier became a professional MMA fighter. Competing predominantly in regional promotions throughout Louisiana and the Southern US, he compiled an impressive 7-0 record in short order. Poirier suffered his first defeat in his World Extreme Cagefighting debut in 2010, losing to Danny Castillo by unanimous decision. Later in the year, he bounced back by defeating Zach Micklewright via TKO at WEC 52.

After World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in late 2010, Poirier began competing in the UFC.
